The Poetry of the Multitude

The Next Objectivists are engaged in an ongoing endeavor to produce a new kind of autonomous poetry. Our poetypists transcribe material given to them by ordinary people at pubic & semi-public events. Workshop members & the public at large work together to revise the transcribed material (raw or/e) into poems which have no individual authorship.

We take inspiration from William Carlos Williams' 1948 lecture, The Poem as a Field of Action, in which he declares:

what we are trying to do is not only to disengage the elements of measure [currently promoted by poetry institutions] but to seek . . . a new measure or a new way of measuring that will be commensurate with the social, economic world in which we are living as contrasted with the past.

Dr. Williams' unfinished project gains new meaning in the era of globalized & computerized capital. More than ever before we need to create a new poetics of "profusion"--the poetry of the multitude. Williams:

We seek profusion, the Mass--heterogeneous--ill-assorted--quite breathless--grasping at all kinds of things--as if--. . . we might think of the profusion of a Rabelais--as against a limited output. It is as though for a moment we should be profuse, we Americans; we need to build up a mass, a conglomerate maybe, containing few gems but bits of them--Brazilian brilliants--that shine of themselves, uncut as they are. . . . We are making a modern bolus: That is our somewhat undistinguished burden; profusion, as, we must add in all fairness, against distinction.

To this end, the Next Objectivists have begun to publish a plethora of small, nearly indistinguishable, entirely anonymous & totally free chapbooks. Titles in this undistinguishing series so far include:
